Gemstone Color
The jewelry industry recognizes the highest quality gemstones by purity of their hue, the depth of tone, and the color saturation. The highest valued gemstone jewelry is in the stones that include "slight" traces of other colors, are not too light or dark, and have a lot of saturated color. Passion Gems offers some of the highest-quality colored gemstones available while keeping the gemstone jewelry affordable. Nearly all gemstones today, including Passion Gems stones, have been treated to enhance their color. The most common methods of treatment are heating, nearly always seen with aquamarine, citrine, amethyst, sapphire, ruby and tanzanite, and irradiation performed on nearly all blue topaz.

Gemstone Clarity
Almost all gemstones contain inclusions. Even those most highly prized and highly valued gemstones have at least some inclusions. Flawless gemstones are very rare and very expensive and are usually not available to the public. The best gemstone value is found in gems that are lightly to moderately included, like those in our gemstone jewelry. Emeralds are typically treated with colorless oil, wax or resin to minimize surface-reaching inclusions.

Gemstone Cut
Unlike the fine diamond jewelry we carry, with gemstones there isn't an "optimal" cut geometrically configured for maximum shine and brilliance. A high-quality gemstone cut is one that presents the most even color, shows the smallest amount of inclusions, and displays the majority of the gemstone weight when set in jewelry.

Gemstone Size
The carat weight of a gemstone is not always an accurate gauge for gemstone size. To help you judge the size of a gemstone, Passion Gems lists the diameter of the gemstone when viewed from the top, if the gemstone is set in jewelry. This is usually the only part of the gemstone that is visible.

Gemstone Enhancements and Care
Nearly all gemstone jewelry on the market, including the gemstone jewelry offered by Passion Gems, have been treated to enhance their appearance. Gemstone jewelry that have not been treated but have desirable color and clarity are extremely rare and require extremely high prices. Some enhancements are almost always universal, permanent, and require no special care of the gemstone, such as heat treatment to enhance the gemstone's color. Other enhancement treatments are common, and may require more or less special care to avoid damage and maintain brilliance, such as the infusion of colorless oil, wax or resin to improve clarity.
